Uncategorized   ·   January 6, 2010

History revealed recented with The Rachel Schooner reappeared after a recent topical storm. My great, great grandfather John DeAngelo was the builder of this ship. On January 2nd, we revisited the site to see first- hand a important link to our family history.

You can see the photos on my Facebook Page- Dallas Teague Snider

When it was first discover after Hurrican Ivan this was the story:

She was a beautiful vessel with three masts and a shallow draught. The De Angelo yard often included small diesel engines in their sailing craft up to 300shp, however none were steam powered. Popular legend has it that she was sunk not long after being built for the insurance money, burned off of Gulf Shores. The wreck found on the beach in Alabama has what looks to be connection rods for an expansion steam engine as well as a long central condenser pipe for the same type of power plant.

I have made a couple of videos of this wreck over the years. They are on my site: http://www.algulfcoastvideo.com

I was later informed by Ken DeAngelo of his information. Lots of information, history, drawings and old photos of the ship: http://picasaweb.google.com/Kenneth.DeAngelo/SchoonerRachelPhotoBookComingEmailForInfo#
