I must say that today when I returned to Birmingham, about 9:00 a.m. this morning, I was exhausted, cranky and just ready to call it a day. Before I could get settled and resign myself to catch up on some must needed Z’s, I scanned the paper just to ensure that the sky had not fallen in my absence.

At initial glance, I did not find anything particularly unusual about today’s news. It was filled with the lasted political corruption happenings, shootings, and gloomy outlook on what lies ahead. Suddenly, I became studied on a particular article that caught my attention. It seemed that there was a potential county school board candidate that was running for an open school board position; however, this person had previously run under false pretenses but was back again for a second time.

I thought, “Wow, how bold!” With the same passing thought, I suddenly had the urge to find out what the qualifications where to run for such a position. Was this my calling to get off my fanny and stand up for those that cannot stand for themselves?

With NO sleep for over 24 hours, I was now doing the research to find out if this was one of those perfect timing situations (God’s timing, not mine). After a few phones calls, I was clear that the deadline was tomorrow, and I did not have all the information I needed to make such a decision. In fact, I am struggling to keep my small business afloat in today’s economy. Do I really need to take this on? Come on, really?

Well, what I discovered is that there are organizations and people that can help you begin the process so you do not get caught off guard, in a mental red-eye flight state of mind, and miss your chance to step up and make a difference. Yes, we need to make a daily difference that is true- regardless of our station in life.

So now what? I am still exhausted, sporting a pounding headache and about to fall over; however, I am more informed than I was four hours early, because I asked a question.

I have now connected with four individuals in my quest for answers. What I found is there were people willing to offer a place to learn more and provide a foundation to direct my God given leadership skills.
