Eariler this month, we saw the grace and composure displayed by Armando Galarraga when many others would have acted differently. As a business etiquette and professional success coach, I do my best to impress upon others that the perception camera is always rolling. Armando’s response was an example of behavior we should all aspire to. Yes, there are no perfect people. With understanding and a lot of composure, his demeanor will serve as a positive role model for years to come.
It is a shame that today in our society, we expect people to be belligerent, rude and disrespectful. We give license to foul language and a lack of civility. When did we become so self absorbed that we forgot where we came from, what the founders of our country risked their lives for, so we could have the freedom of what we call America?
Just think, Armando was given a 2011 Chevy Corvette as a gift; General Motors is a Tigers sponsor. What could happen to you if you adopted a like mind-set. If you looked for the good in people first? You were aware of the needs of others around you, or that you chose to think before you speak. You gave 100% to your employer in good times and bad.
You never know what can happen when you change your focus. Someone could offer you an offer of a lifetime, just because you were nice to them when others had treated them differently. Perhaps a promotion because you are a team player, helping out whenever needed.
Food for thought!

Dallas,
It is sad that we expect the negative reaction, but I think that is perpetuated by the media. I think there are far more gracious, kind and well-mannered people than what we see on TV. Unfortunately “Man Acts Appropriately with Good Manners” isn’t a very exciting headline, haha.
On the other hand, the kind of people who are rude, belligerant and foul-mouthed are also responding with physical violance, which pretty much quashes my desire to tell them how shamefully they behave.
