Have you ever heard anyone say something like, “I didn’t mean anything by that… you know me.” Or perhaps, “They just misunderstood what I said. I was only joking. People just can’t take a joke anymore.”

Yes, at times we can tend to be too sensitive, but that depends on what lense you are looking through. Have you ever been the butt of a joke? How did that make you feel?

When we are trying to build relationships with others, it takes time to earn the trust to have the right to make statements that could otherwise seem inappropriate or offensive.

Here is an example:

Let’s say that you had a work colleague that was rushed to the hospital one afternoon unexpectedly. When your colleague returns the next day you ask, “Are you ok?” They simply respond, “Yes, thank you for asking. I feel much better now.” This answer indicates that your colleague appreciated the kind gesture, but to ask more questions would be crossing the line.

How can you tell? Well, if the person answers your question and doesn’t engage further dialog about that subject, it is best to be aware of the body language clues that indicate they no longer wish to discuss this personal matter.

If you cannot help yourself, you could offer the following statement, “Well, if you would you like to talk about just let me know.” This way your colleague understands your concern; however, you are giving him or her the option to pursue having a more in-depth conversation or choosing to keep that information close to heart.

Who knows? In time, your colleague may just talk with you about things without you asking. Why? – Because you have respected their boundaries and now they can trust you. If your colleague doesn’t open up to you, don’t take it personally. There are some people that share more than others.

Just remember to respect the boundaries of your co-workers and you will go a long way in building a supportive and pleasant work environment.

It is our response that makes the difference when these unfortunate gaffes occur. We can either be one that helps someone else overcome their personal embarrassment and make light of a situation, or we can choose to let our ego override our common sense and be the butt of the entire situation.

Take a moment to review what the individuals in this article did so brilliantly. What can we learn by their example? Remember that relationships and loyalty can be made and destroyed in an instant. What will you choose?

Tis’ the season for holiday parties which calls for a little bit of everyday common sense, so you don’t become part of the office gossip roundup. So what can do?

Make sure you attend- Even if you don’t like your co-workers, your boss or your job. In today’s economy, many would love to have a job period. So be grateful. Just attend for about 30 minutes to show your co-workers that you do value the team. Remember perception is reality.

Dress Appropriately- This is not the time to wear something too short, too revealing, to0 low and too extreme. You may want to hold off on that Santa costume unless someone has asked you to wear it.

3. Prepare Your Spouse or Significant Other- Remember your spouse or date’s behavior will have a positive or negative reflection on you as well. Let them know what is to be expected. Be sure they are aware of the dress code for the event. If you aren’t sure, contact the coordinator so that there are no surprises. No one wants to be uncomfortable when it can be avoided.

Don’t Drink to Much- Do I really need to elaborate? It is best to adhere to one or two drinks, but avoid that if you cannot maintain a professional demeanor. You know your limits.

Be Personable – Not Personal – Avoid death by small talk by asking questions that are just too personal. For example: One out of the two marriages end in divorce, what is different about yours? Not the way to win over someone when you are trying to get to know them. Tip: If you wonder if it’s too personal or you would be uncomfortable answering that question, don’t do it.

Often times I will ask during a speaking engagement who in the room today is in sales, few hands go up. The truth is that we are all selling ourselves. People want to work and do business with people they like.

All sales are about relationships: if you don’t understand how your behavior affects what others think of you, you are sabotaging your success. Every time you get in front of people you may be doing something that is costing you business or potential opportunities. People are making and yes or no decision every 3 seconds – subconsciously of course.

First: There is no excuse for not being prepared. Being organized is essential element in making a positive first impression. If an applicant arrives with clothes disheveled and just inappropriate for an interview, this will make a lasting impression that will not be favorable. If you cannot take the time to iron your clothes or pay attention to your professional attire or proper grooming, what does that say to a potential employer? Ultimately the potential employer is asking the questions, does this applicant have the technical skills and professional image that will have a positive impact on our organization.

Some elements include:

Arrive at least 15 minutes early. After greeting the receptionist and sign-in, be sure to go to the restroom to check out your appearance and make any necessary adjustments.

Make sure to bring a copy of your resume for every person that you will be meeting during the interview process. Although they may have an electronic copy, you displaying your ability to work as a team and think of others.

When you enter the room, stand straight, shoulders down, head-up, remember you are asked to be there. Be confident and extend your hand for a proper business handshake.

Wait to sit until you are directed to do so. Be sure to sit up straight in the chair and lean slightly forward to show interest.

Understand the company culture and be ready to ask your questions when the interviewer prompts you to.

Upon leaving, extend your hand for a closing handshake, thank them for their time, and send a thank you note within 48 hours.

Many people sabotage future opportunities because they lose sight that although a particular job is not a good fit, the next one just might be. Or that person can be a wonderful recommendation for another job with a different organization.

Second: People often make these mistakes because they are just not aware, but that is no excuse. We have to take control of our own future. When we are prepared and know that we know what our behavior and professional image is saying, we can enter any situation with a healthy confidence. As a professional coach I work with clients to help them make their first impression their best impression so that they can know with confidence that they have done their very best.

Etiquette Lessons for the Holiday and Travel Season

Should I comment about airport etiquette? Believe it or not, I was pleasantly surprised today when traveling; however, please pay attention to where you are walking and on what side my friends. Be aware of what you are doing. Are you holding up others along the way? If so, let them pass or go ahead if possible. Try to avoid texting or dialing while looking down and walking. Do what you can to avoid a head-end collision?

On the way out of town a lady was looking for a place to sit. Although there were seats around us available, she looked concerned of how she could get to the seat on the other side without falling on the mountain of bags. I asked her if she would like to sit, if so we could move down. You would have thought I did something extra special. She said “That is so kind of you. Thank you so much.”

Here’s the question. Did I really do anything that special? I just noticed someone’s body language and offered a very easy solution to her perceived dilemma. It does take a PHD, just some common courtesy.

Today a TSA Agent asked two people in front of us at security to move down the line because it was really about everyone- not just them. Although he was being a little sassy, the essence point his was making is really true. It is about all of us. I hope you had a wonderful holiday.

Remember during this season take a few extra moments so you are not rushed. Be sure to consider others as you go about your day to day. You just might offer a small gesture that can make or break someone’s day.

When you have “convenience” food bombarding you from every direction, it can be difficult to choose options that give your body the nourishment it needs.

However, if you have daily reminders and effective tools at your disposal, you just may find that eating the right foods and feeding your body the best fuels becomes a lot easier.

Of course, there will always be temptation, but when you equip yourself with anti-temptation tools, you will be able to quickly re-focus your mind on your greater goal of getting healthy!

Using Affirmations to Make the Healthy Food and Nutrition Choices

When everyone around you at the office is indulging in burgers, fries, and sugary drinks, it’s awfully tempting to join in, isn’t it?

But what if you could stop that temptation in its tracks and actually choose to make a healthy choice? You don’t need me to tell you that fatty and sugary choices are not the kinds of food that your body needs – you need to tell yourself!

It can be hard in moments of temptation to make the right choice, but with the help of positive affirmations, you can re-train your brain to replace the desire for junk food with healthy choices.

Affirmations can help you stick to your diet, say no to temptation, and eat nourishing and satisfying foods. How? By replacing the negative spiral of thoughts in your mind with powerful, positive ones.

But first you have to believe that it is possible to gain control over your thirsts, desires, and cravings. The first step in making a lasting change in your life is to make the commitment to success. Are you committed? Do you believe that you can overcome your cravings?

Once you’ve set your commitment in stone, you’re ready to learn the top 10 affirmations to get you through moments of weakness.

Top 10 Food and Nutrition Affirmations

Before reading the list below, you should know that affirmations are most successful when you internalize the saying and repeat it frequently. Whether you’re having a good or bad day, you need to be constantly repeating these positive statements in your mind. Temptation will strike when you least expect it, so it’s better to be prepared!

I can neutralize bad habits with good food, exercise, and healthy living.

I am proud to reach out to my support network instead of leaning on food for comfort.

I am losing weight for me because I love me.

I set aside time just for me.

My good health and productivity are the rewards for the nourishing foods I eat.

Weight gain happens over time, so my weight loss equally requires time, patience, and lifestyle changes.

I use self-care, not self-control.

The more I take care of myself, the better I feel.

I am firmly committed to staying active and healthy.

10. I deserve a healthy body and mind.

When you look at these food and nutrition affirmations, they may seem like ideals – behaviors and thoughts that you only wish you could have – but each time you reaffirm them by saying them aloud, you’re slowly changing your mindset. Over time, these ideals will become a reality through your thoughts and actions.

But remember, you must first believe you can change. Once you make the commitment to your success, you will change your attitudes about food and you’ll be thankful you did!
