Do You Consider God – The Big Vending Machine in the Sky?

This week, I heard someone say, “I no longer consider God the big vending machine in the sky.” How often do we just go to God when we want or need something? Better yet, when we think that we can’t handle a situation, then we think it is worth a talk with the big guy in the sky.

Wouldn’t it be nice, to have a personal relationship with Jesus. One where you could start each morning seeking him. When you start every day like that, the trials that come our way each day will give us a renewed prospective. Remember, the bible says that when we accept Jesus, we encounter a renewing of our mind.

God desires a daily relationship with you. Not just a relationship where you have a particular request or difficult hardship. He cares about you everyday-all day. I find myself chatting with God in the car throughout the day-a moment to say what is on my mind, ask him for his protection and favor and most importantly thank him for the blessings.

The challenge with God is that when you ask for things, you may not get what you asked for. In fact, you may get something totally different. Remember, he has a plan and purpose for your life.

So, what Vending Machine would give you an orange when you ask for a candy bar? Furthermore, what Vending Machine would just give you a candy bar when you didn’t pay for it? How often does God bless us when we don’t deserve it? That’s easy… it began at the cross.

Good Intentions Without Action Are Worthless

Have you ever heard anyone say something like, “I didn’t mean anything by that… you know me.” Or perhaps, “They just misunderstood what I said. I was only joking. People just can’t take a joke anymore.”

Yes, at times we can tend to be too sensitive, but that depends on what lense you are looking through. Have you ever been the butt of a joke? How did that make you feel?

When we are trying to build relationships with others, it takes time to earn the trust to have the right to make statements that could otherwise seem inappropriate or offensive.

Here is an example:

Let’s say that you had a work colleague that was rushed to the hospital one afternoon unexpectedly. When your colleague returns the next day you ask, “Are you ok?” They simply respond, “Yes, thank you for asking. I feel much better now.” This answer indicates that your colleague appreciated the kind gesture, but to ask more questions would be crossing the line.

How can you tell? Well, if the person answers your question and doesn’t engage further dialog about that subject, it is best to be aware of the body language clues that indicate they no longer wish to discuss this personal matter.

If you cannot help yourself, you could offer the following statement, “Well, if you would you like to talk about just let me know.” This way your colleague understands your concern; however, you are giving him or her the option to pursue having a more in-depth conversation or choosing to keep that information close to heart.

Who knows? In time, your colleague may just talk with you about things without you asking. Why? – Because you have respected their boundaries and now they can trust you. If your colleague doesn’t open up to you, don’t take it personally. There are some people that share more than others.

Just remember to respect the boundaries of your co-workers and you will go a long way in building a supportive and pleasant work environment.
