University hosting business week

Wednesday, April 08, 2009
ROY L. WILLIAMS
Birmingham News staff writer

Students at Samford University’s Brock School of Business are hearing about real-life experiences from several area entrepreneurs today as part of its first executives in residence week campaign.

John Cassimus, a restaurateur known for his success at the Zoe’s Kitchen USA chain he sold last year, is one of 18 area business owners and chief executives addressing undergraduate and graduate students at Samford in various classes this week. Cassimus, who now heads Maki Fresh in Cahaba Grande, will speak in Chad Carson’s business class at 1 p.m. today, and in two classes led by Betsy Holloway Thursday.

“This week is designed to expand the classroom and enhance the business curriculum,” Business Dean Beck Taylor said in a prepared statement. “We value our partnership with the business community and we appreciate the time, expertise and support that these executives are willing to share.”

The program began Monday with presentations to students by professionals such as ServisFirst CEO Tom Broughton, Vicki Braggs of Health Management Associates and Larry Mann, controller of ACIPCO. Other participants include Dallas Teague Snider, owner of Make Your Best Impression, Greg Powell, president of Fi-Plan Partners and Jeffrey Tolbert, CEO of AirMed International.

Kara Kennedy, director of external affairs of Brock School of Business, said the university plans to continue its executives in residence program annually. “We hope students form relationships and learn from the executives’ experience as they pursue careers of their own,” she said.

Cassimus and other executives will participate in a business panel at 4 p.m. Thursday in Brock Forum that aims to help students set education and career goals.
