This week I was asked to offer some expert advice for a Human Resource Executive on-line column. We all know that when we witness someone being rude to another person or to group of people, it doesn’t evoke a warm and fuzzy feeling. In fact, often one bad apple can poison an entire group of people. Do you know someone that always tends to point out the negative in every situation? Perhaps, you find yourself completely drained of energy when you are around certain people.
A recent study by the University of Florida found that even those that were not specifically targeted with rudeness still suffered ill effects. It further stated that when workers simply observed discourteous behavior they had a difficult time with creativity and team work. It even promoted the harboring of ill or destructive feelings. Not only is this behavior destructive to the individual, companies also realize a decrease in productivity pursuant to this type of behavior.
Remember that 85% of our success in the workplace is based on our people skills. The way we treat others reflects our personal character. The study further proves that treating one another with dignity and respect also aids in increasing brain function and productivity.
