The Goals of Personal Development-Making the Most Your Talents

Make Your Best Impression Blog   ·   September 25, 2009

It is a goal of life to make the world a better place than when you came into it. In order to do that, you have to change yourself by living up to your potential. This is what personal development is all about.

Let’s begin by saying what personal development is not. Personal development has nothing to do with diagnosing physical or mental problems. That’s the self-help section.

Wanting to make the most of who you are and the talents you possess is more along the lines of personal development. How you go about enhancing your gifts stems from your purpose in life. Everyone has a purpose.

You may not have thought of it that way before but your philosophy of life permeates everything you do. How you treat others or how you run your household all comes from your views on life. These views come from:

  •  Your parents’ influence
  • Your friends
  • What you learned growing up
  • Your family history

With all of this learned behavior the rest is up to you. Personal development doesn’t happen overnight and it’s not necessarily easy. It is a lifelong journey. As you grow and change, so do your desires in life.

Personal development takes place over your entire life. That’s what gives life meaning. You are always looking forward to something new. In the end (not the END, but when you reach your goal), the journey is just as fulfilling as the actual achievement of your goal.

There are many facets of personal development. Most people think that you set a goal and then achieve it. That is basically true but goals are set in many areas of your life from personal appearance to how you make friends. Any time you want to improve on yourself or your situation you are setting a goal that will net personal rewards.

True goal achievement doesn’t cut corners. It may seem like a good idea when your motivation is waning, but if you’ve ever put together a physical project, cutting corners leads to disappointment in yourself and the outcome of your goal. If you want to make positive changes in yourself, don’t make any hasty decisions when you are feeling down. Let the mood pass and keep to your goal plan.

Your personal development goals come from who you are and what talents you have. Who you are gives you the motivation to go after your dreams. Your talents will be the vehicle that gets you there.
